Whitney Houston 1993 World Tour, European Leg

This production had already covered most of the world with an all-American crew by the time it reached Europe, with only South America to go thereafter. For the European leg the production took on four English lighting crew: two conventional technicians from Light & Sound Design and two from Vari-lite Europe, of which I was one.

The Vari-lite system was a mixture of around sixty VL2Cs and VL4s, most of which were rigged on the semi-circular truss in the pictures. This was one of the last wholly Series 200 systems that I worked on.
We never got to meet the LD, whose work had been completed long before we joined the tour. The Vari-lites were run by Texan operator Matt Ford.

As you can see, I was heavily into black and white photography at the time. This was a rare foray into rock 'n' roll touring for me and one which I thoroughly enjoyed. This kind of job is great for learning about how to do things quickly and how to fine tune a gig, so that it runs smoothly every day.
