Peter Maffay Begegnungen Tour

Peter Maffay began his musical career as a Schlagersaenger, a purveyor of the kind of music normally associated with the Eurovision Song Contest. Despite huge success with early his hits, he became restless and over the years has taken several risks with his career, frequently changing musical direction.

Begegnungen ("Encounters") was the latest change in style for Herr Maffay. An album and tour dealing with the theme of world music, featuring musicians from across the globe. Musical styles as diverse as Aboriginal, Yemenite, Louisiana slide guitar and Germano Turkish Rap were all represented here, along with a healthy dose of good, old fashioned German pop.

The main lighting contractor for the two month tour was TLC, with myself and Jezz Harmer as technicians for Vari-lite Deutschland. Our system comprised fifty-six active luminaires, which were mainly VL5 Arcs and VL6s, but also included eight of the then very new VL7s. Apart from one show in Zurich the tour remained in Germany, taking in most of the major cities and popular venues.

The lighting was designed by Guenter Jäckle. Dirk "Digger" Feuerstein was the Artisan operator, with André Bress running the conventional system from an Avolites Sapphire.
