Lea Valley Development Corporation Conference, Three Mills Studios, London

What started out looking like a fairly straight forward production soon became an exciting challenge. The client decided to book a modern dance company to perform a piece at the end of the show. They had some trussing of their own that they wanted to use...

Fortunately their designer was a clever chap, who had worked everything out in advance and built a detailed model in 1:25 scale. A long evening with a scale ruler, a protractor and the computer then followed...
The venue was built in WYSICAD and the measurements from the model carefully entered in. Eventually a 3D vitual model emerged. The next problem was how to produce a readable plan. The solution was to produce several plot views from different angles, while paying very close attention to the paperwork.

It was agreed at the beginning that this would be mainly a moving light rig, with conventional units to be used only for speaker positions stage washes and audience lighting.

Overall set washes in three colours came from four 6 lamp bars, rigged directly overhead. A light frost was used to help maximise the spread. Sixteen Martin Robocolour Pro 400s were used to shoot narrow beams up the 'vertical' members of the truss.

Low angle side and backlight came from six Martin MAC 600s while twelve MAC 500s were used to pick up individual performers give rotational and other effects. The show was programmed and run by me, using an Avolites Pearl 2000.
