1987 - present:

Freelance Lighting Designer & Technician

As a freelancer I have worked in practically all areas of show lighting. Conferences, fashion, trade and award shows, touring, outdoor events, exhibitions, parties and theatre all fall within my range of experience. I am equally at home working on either generic or moving light systems.
I worked extensively in television between 1987 and 1992 at Limehouse Studios, both in the studio and on news gathering and location shoots. Television work includes Have I Got News For You, Whose Line Is It Anyway, Surprise Surprise, The Word and Barrymore. These shows, along with many others, have left me with a good understanding of lighting for video.
In autumn 1990 I was fully trained as a Vari-lite Technician and in 1995 as an Artisan Operator. I have worked frequently in both capacities for their London office and other companies and as a technician for their German and Belgian distributors.
Although I still work happily as a technician on small to medium scale projects, I am currently more keen to concentrate my efforts on Lighting Design and Moving Light Programming, wherever in the Industry that path may lead me next. I have my own copy of the highly versatile WYSICAD software from CAST Lighting, to assist in the visualisation, organisation and presentation of ideas and concepts. I have already put it to good use on the projects shown in the Design Projects Photo Galleries. Additionally I have expanded my programming abilities to include the Avolites Pearl, of which I am a frequent user. I have also done both the AC Lighting and Flying Pig Systems Wholehog 2 training courses and have a small amount of show experience, both with that desk and the Jands Hog. Most recently of all I have been trained by VLPS on the new Vari-lite Virtuoso console.
